OrthoBethesda Surgeon Pioneers Breakthrough Technology for Hip Replacements in Maryland

Dr. Sridhar Durbhakula becomes first surgeon in the state to use
new “mixed reality” navigation system to enhance hip replacement surgery.

Dr. Sridhar Durbhakula, an orthopaedic surgeon on the OrthoBethesda team, has become the first surgeon in the state of Maryland to perform anterior hip replacement surgery using the first FDA-cleared “mixed reality” system, known as HipInsight™.

This leading edge surgical navigation technology is engineered to enhance hip replacement surgery by providing surgeons like Dr. Durbhakula with an unprecedented level of insight into each patient’s unique anatomy, enabling him to operate with a level of precision never before possible, and ultimately leading to improved outcomes for patients.

Using the HipInsight™ System, Dr. Durbhakula develops a personalized 3D surgical plan using a scan of the patient’s pelvis. The personalized surgical plan is transformed into holograms of the patient’s hip bone and joint, as well as the instruments used to place the implant and the implant itself.

During surgery Dr. Durbhakula wears mixed reality glasses which allow him to see holographic images of the patient’s pelvic CT scans, surgical instrumentation and the hip implant components overlayed on the patient’s hip to enable accurate implant placement in the body in real time.

“During a traditional hip replacement, the patient’s pelvic scans and surgical plan are displayed on a monitor, so you have to look back and forth between the patient and the monitor to place and align the implant to match the plan,” Dr. Durbhakula said. “With the HipInsight™ System, the mixed-reality headset allows me to see the patient’s scans and customized surgical plan in the same field of vision as the patient’s body.”
